Skill Booster: How to Write a Proposal That Gets a Reply (Even If You Have No Big Brand Clients Yet)
Your skills matter — but how you present them matters more.
Most freelancers lose the job in the first 3 lines. Here's how not to:
1. Start with what the client cares about.
❌ “Hi, I’m a designer with 3 years of experience…”
✅ “I help founders turn raw footage into content that gets shared 10x more.”
→ Talk about results, not just your job title.
2. Answer doubts before they ask.
Clients often worry about delays, bad communication, or fancy work that doesn’t perform.
Say something like:
“I work async with Loom updates + Trello boards so you’re always in the loop—no chasing needed.”
3. Show a clear and simple process.
This builds confidence that you’ll get things done.
Example process:
• Review existing content
• Shortlist best raw clips
• Edit and deliver variations for testing
4. End with a clear call to action.
Don’t just say “let me know.” Make it easy to say yes.
Try this:
“Happy to send over 2 quick sample edits if you’d like to test chemistry—just reply with a link and I’ll get started.”
Remember: You’re not selling yourself — you’re offering a solution to their problem. That mindset shift changes everything.
Toolbox: Smart Tools to Elevate Your Workflow
Not all tools need to be fancy. These free or freemium options help you deliver better work—and get noticed for it.
🛠️ Notion – Organize projects, build mini-portfolios, and share progress with clients
📂 TidyCal – Let clients book you without back-and-forth emails (better than Calendly for solo workers)
🎤 Descript – Clean audio, remove filler words, and create podcast-style clips fast
📸 Thumblisher – Generate clean video thumbnails or social previews with one click
Bonus tip: Add a “Tools I Use” section to your resume or Upwork profile. Clients love plug-and-play pros who don’t need hand-holding.
