Skill Booster: How to Write Async Messages That Actually Get Responses

Remote work runs on written communication. And most people write too much, say too little, or bury the actual ask somewhere in the third paragraph.

Here's how to write messages that move things forward:

1. Lead with the ask, not the backstory Most people explain context first and drop the question last. Flip it. Open with what you need. Then provide context for why.

2. Make it one message, not a setup "Hey, do you have a minute?" wastes two people's time. Say what you need in the same message, every time.

3. Keep it scannable Short paragraphs. Bold the key point. People read async messages mid-task, on a phone, half-distracted. Write for that version of them.

4. Include a soft deadline "By Friday works for me" tells people how urgent this is. Without it, your message gets mentally filed under "later."

5. Close every loop yourself When something resolves, send a short follow-up: "Done, went with option B, thanks." Don't make people wonder if it's still open.
